Ambassador Profile: 1st Camera Assistant Meghan Commons

Ambassador Profile: 1st Camera Assistant Meghan Commons

Meghan Commons's career as a filmmaker has taken her around the world, from Italy and Germany to Haiti and Romania, where she has worked with brands like Netflix, Nike, and Hugo Boss. Each job is a new opportunity to capture unique stories and experiences. Her passion for filmmaking has been unwavering since she began working in the industry at the age of 13. With experience in nearly every department, she knew that her true passion was behind the camera.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got started?

I'm a set brat. Both my parents are in the industry. My mom is a Producer, AD, and Writer. My Dad is a Director of Photography! So I grew up as a young child hanging around set. I was a Production Assistant at 13 years old and by 18, I had started 2nd AC'ing. Now over 10 years into my Camera Assistant career, I still love set life and there's nothing I would rather do than pull focus and build cameras.

What are some of your favorite INOVATIV products that you currently own and why?

I love my Apollo! She is my work horse. But my favorite accessory is the Camera Mount System for my quick release plate. It's really comforting knowing I have a reliable place to mount the camera.

Can you share some specific examples of how INOVATIV gear has helped you overcome challenges or achieve exceptional results?

Having a cart that's built tough and reliable gives me the confidence to take it on hard jobs. I had this one short film where the locations were all over these hilly, rocky, weedy fields. We pushed the Apollo around fully kitted out with everything I needed. It handled the challenge like a pro!

How do you customize your INOVATIV setup to meet the unique demands of your work?

I love how customizable an INOVATIV workstation cart is! I set mine up with a Corner Plug with a baby pin on one corner for a hand held monitor to be placed when not being carried around. On the opposite corner I have a Two-Stage Mast Riser baby pin for my 13 inch focus monitor. I like having the option where if space is tight or the terrain is rough I can have my monitor close by.

What advice would you give to aspiring professionals?

Work as hard as you can on every set you’re on but also don't beat yourself up if it doesn't go perfectly. Today doesn't equal forever, it's going to be ok. Take a deep breath and try again on the next one.

When you're not working on projects, how do you like to recharge and find inspiration for your next creative endeavor?

When I have down time I love to paint, draw, cook, and bake. Since Camera assisting isn't the "most" creative job I find that I can get my creative muscles moving by working in my art studio or trying a new recipe. I also love playing video games, which helps my hand-eye-coordination, making my focus pulling sharper!

What are you currently working on?

My most recent feature film just released not long ago on streaming (available for rent) called Head Count! It's a funny Neo-western that keeps you on your toes!
